There was commotion in Chikwaka Communal Lands on Friday 17 October morning after a borehole drilling truck belonging to a local water solutions company veered off the road and plunged into Mubvinzi River.

The accident occurred near the narrow steel bridge where the truck, en route to drill a borehole for the community, lost control while descending a slope and tumbled into the river.

The driver, who sustained serious injuries, was quickly rescued by bystanders and rushed to Shamva Hospital for emergency medical attention. Sources at the scene said he appeared to have suffered multiple fractures.

Remarkably, the drilling company responded within hours, dispatching a heavy-duty crane that successfully retrieved the sunken truck from the river the same day. Villagers gathered in large numbers to witness the recovery operation, expressing concern over the safety of the bridge and access road.

“This could have been worse. We’re thankful the driver survived, but something must be done about this road,” said a local villager. Shinsoman, who was briefed about the incident, emphasized the need for improved infrastructure to support development projects in rural areas. Despite the setback, community leaders remain hopeful the borehole project will continue once the situation stabilizes.
