Maizon’s Jameson Hotel Gig to Add Voice to Fight Against Drug Abuse in Zimbabwe
By Ronnie Chisamba
Young Afro-jazz star, Maizon Tazvitya – aka Maizon of the Ancient Tribes – is scheduled to perform at Jameson Hotel, in the capital city, Harare, tonight. Themed: “Amplifying the Voices Against Addiction”, the performance is meant to cement the musician’s commitment to fighting drug abuse in Zimbabwe.
Inspired by the late Dr Oliver Mutudzi, he was motivated to pursue a career as an Afro-jazz musician because of the genre’s ability to blend Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage with soulful sounds which speak to the heart and soul, and ignite reflection and connection with the populace.
“My genre of music is Afro-jazz, and I was motivated to pursue it because it allows me to blend Zimbabwe’s rich heritage with soulful sounds that can speak to the heart and spark reflection,” he pointed out during an interview today.
Maizon’s musical journey began at Chipawo, an organisation which strives to identify and promote artistic talents in children. Working with the late legendary Dr Oliver Mutudzi and his son, Sam Mutukudzi [now late], at Pakare Paye Arts Centre helped nurture his career.
Born in Dzivarasekwa, Harare, in 1987, he strongly believes music plays a pivotal role in the fight against drug abuse. “I believe music fights drug abuse by creating awareness, offering healing, and giving youth an alternative voice and identity beyond substances,” he elaborated.
Maizon’s latest offering, “Majurumbwe”, has received tremendous airplay on numerous radio stations.
