Sunday, 28 September was a day of learning, sharing, and inspiration as community members from across Shamva and Bindura gathered at Murgwi Community Centre for an “Open Sunday” event themed “Food Production and Food Security.”

Among the exhibitors was Hope Bindura, a project under DAPP (Development Aid from People to People), which focuses on HIV and AIDS-related support, targeting both the infected and affected in the community.

The event offered a rare platform for beneficiaries of Hope Bindura to showcase their products and produce from various livelihood projects, ranging from farming to sewing. Visitors were impressed by the variety and quality on display, a clear sign of empowerment through sustainable initiatives.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Hazvinei Kufa, a lay counsellor in the Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) department, highlighted the significance of participating in such events.

“A healthy farmer is a productive farmer,” she said. “We train our support group members to grow their own food so they can maintain a nutritious diet. This is crucial for people living with HIV as it helps strengthen the immune system and reduces vulnerability to illness.”

Kufa emphasized that Hope Bindura’s mission is to build resilience and promote well-being through food production and security. The organization runs outreach programmes that engage farmers on improving livelihoods and income generation, while also promoting health and sustainability.

She added that the organisation works closely with key government departments, including the Ministry of Agriculture (Agritex) and the Ministry of Health and Child Care through its nutritionists.

“We teach farmers to grow various crops organically, avoiding synthetic fertilizers. Not only is this healthier, but it also encourages sustainable farming practices. The farmers sell to each other and the local community, which helps strengthen local market systems,”said Kufa.

The event offered a meaningful opportunity for Hope Bindura’s support groups to showcase their contributions to both personal and national food security, and the work being done to integrate health, farming, and livelihoods.

The initiative was praised by Humana People to People, the parent organization, for creating a platform that promotes interaction, empowerment, and sustainable development.
